in north carolina as it moves away from the coast, it's going to continue to worsen at virginia beach as well as ocean city, maryland and cape maine, new jersey. the storm is at the bulk of it. you can see on the satellite, i'll loop it for you. the bulk of the system was well to the west. it's 100 miles east of virginia beach. it's the outer most bans on the western side coming through the areas on virginia beach. even the northern neck. it's a category two. it's going to pick up speed. cape cod and nantucket will get the worst of it before moving away. right now, northeast at 16 miles per hour. the watch and advisories remain up. i'm expecting, barbara, i know you are trying to make it there this weekend. winds 60 miles per hour in cape cod. we'll tell you what to expect where the showers are east of 95. >> did they say the islands off massachusetts could take a direct hit? >> not a direct hit but more rain. two to four inches of rain if not more in somexd areas. >> we'll check in with you again. hurricane earl could keep drivers home. you could avoid delays by traveling before noon

to make its way up the east coast. the storm's wrath is being felt in southeastern virginia. it brought heavy rain and rough surf to the north carolina coast. there are some reports of flooding in the outer barnings. while the storm may not -- banks. while the storm may not be as strong, it packs quite a punch. we're going to check in with adam. he is live in ocean city and it is still pretty calm out there, adam, isn't it? >> you know, greta, it is really not that bad out here. we have sustained winds 10-15 miles per hour and few gusts. let's take a look at the latest. still a category 2 storm. maximum sustained winds at 105 miles per hour. a hurricane watch is still in effect in case this happens to wobble to west just a little bit, which is not that likely. situated now 85 miles east of cape hateras. what does that mean for us on the delmarva beaches? wind gusts will increase, especially in the midday and afternoon. rain showers will begin this afternoon. i already see a few drops coming in. we have a band. luck think tide cycle is working in our favor right here. normally you get to

amtrak routes between virginia's tidewater area and newport news have been canceled because of the coming storm. these are live pictures from wrightsville beach, north carolina. many tourists and residents have left north carolina's outer banks. it's still unclear how close the strongest winds and heaviest surge will get to north carolina's fragile chain of barrier islands. tom is here now to tell us what he sees going on right now and some changes happening as we speak. >>> it looks like the winds are picking up at wrightsville beach. you can see the camera bouncing around, and the surf is getting rougher at wrightsville beach, north carolina. well, let's take a look across the tropical atlantic. we've got three named storms. we've got the major hurricane earl and then far to the south and east of that is a rather disorganized tropical storm, fiona. and that, though, is showing a little more organization as it moves off to the north, and that will likely stay way out to sea and not threaten the atlantic seaboard. farther to the east is gaston. it is a tropical storm and it's heading due

beaches and down into virginia. when you get to north carolina pink shaded counties that's an actual hurricane warning for the carolina counties there to the east. so you can just see we are expecting some very rough weather in that direction. a quick check on the beach forecast the first part of the weekend at least, the most unsettled day will be friday. we'll look early to be very, very close to friday afternoon some gusty winds there in ocean city. and then finally we clear it out saturday. but the surf will be up to 4 to 7 feet by thursday. could be 10-foot to 12-foot waves rolling into the beaches on friday night into saturday. so huge waves possible definitely heed your lifeguard warnings if you're headed beach side. >> be sure to stay with abc 2 news for continuing coverage of hurricane earl. tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. a hurricane earl special tracking the path of the storm. special edition of good morning maryland this friday starting at 4:00 a.m. we'll have the latest developments on the storm and its aftermath. you can get the very latest on earl's path on our web site at abc2

at stories making headlines this morning. a lorton, virginia, community mourning the loss of a young mother and two of her children. they were killed in a house fire yesterday. 24-year-old ally anderson was able to save three of her five kids by lowering them down to her uncle on the ground. >>> theresa lewis will be executed in virginia tonight. the first punishment of this type for a woman in the commonwealth in a century. she was sentenced to death for providing sex and money to two men who killed her husband and her stepson back in october of 2002. so far the governor has decided not to grant clemency. lewis is scheduled to be put to death by ion at 9:00 p.m. at a correctional facility in jarrett. >>> gray and michelle rhee scheduled to meet. it will be a closed discussion at city hall at noon today. gray has said that her future in the position would lie heavily based on this conversation today. >>> 7:16 right now. got some city business. now some business that all of us are going to want to listen to. >> hot and humid. we're going to have to open up the pools again. >> why do they shu

to julie wright with the on-time traffic. >>> let's start off in virginia with the inner loop slowing, braddock up to gallows where on the ramp at the exit is a stalled car. latest crash in the main line of 395 approaching glebe. the right side blocked off on the main line. it is heavy, slow and steady up to the accident scene. it's causing a tight squeeze out of shirlington past glebe and toward the 14th street bridge. 95 in separate stretchs will be slow, from dale city to lorton and newington toward the beltway. in maryland, between 205 and cedarville, accident pulled to the shoulder but the 301 is slow toward brandywine. 270 gridlocks to falls road before the pace improves. no change at the scene in northwest. 16th street is blocked off between park and columbia for investigation of an early morning fire. again a lot of bailout traffic on georgia avenue, 13th and 14th streets and north cap. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. >>> we are following the news out of northwest d.c. with several people injured in a fire. many residents forced from their home. this happened at

from the outer banks. virginia beach hit hard and maryland area and beaches in delaware seeing the strongest winds. the storm tracks off the coast for the most part. the heaviest winds and rain offshore and the big waves doing the damage along the coast and the pictures you will see. we have hurricane warnings up for areas of cape cod and the hurricane center thinks it's possible to make a direct impact out on the cape. it is looking more unlikely and still a hurricane warning so we have to wait until they drop that, maybe they'll do that at 11:00. as far as the waves go, 23-foot waves right now of virginia beach. that forecast track takes it parallel to the coast today. don't expect a big increase of the winds today in maryland and delaware. jersey area, long island seeing worse today and right off of cape cod later tonight. here's how it looks. as far as the storm goes, the center of the circles where it's located. heaviest of the rains along the jersey shore, new england 2:00 to 4:00 today and then the worst exiting jersey shore about 6:00. racing up the coast for cape cod,

, delaware, maryland, the virginia coast and even in some cases in north carolina, the storm didn't live up to its billing. it's a little weaker and a little further off the coast. that doesn't mean that we're going to include cape cod, winds could easily be 60 to 70 miles an hour. we still have hurricane warnings out there are to the cape cod area, tropical storm warnings will likely be dropped here shortly from the new jersey coast to cape may and ocean city. we haven't seen tropical storm force winds. the heaviest rain and the gustiest winds are all through the red section south of rhode island and long island. it's going to pour this evening in rhode island. out on the cape, a lot of your activities are going to be soaked and the winds are really going to begin to crank. the seas, we saw how high they were in ocean city, maryland and 14 at ocean city, maryland. we're only going to watch this storm until about 10:00 p.m. tonight around the cape and it will do a little bit of damage and our friends in canada will probably do some cleanup during the day saturday too. so we have always said
